- Registered for Sci Finder. Trying to think how I could narrow my topic down, but not sure which way I want to go with it. Possibly concentrate on a specific mesophilic system.

- Trying to narrow down topic. concentrate on anaerobic system chemical and biological oxygen demands. is a journal article found through google scholar. The upflow blanket reactor was a reactor that was used on a large scale for my co-op so I am familiar with it.

Through science direct: "Characterisation of soluble residual COD in anaerobic wastewater treatment effluents." My job was the characterize the effluent. I would like to do more research on the characterization on a chemical level. DOI LINK

Questions to answer- Why take the VFA?

- Narrow down the strictly thermophilic? .. found journal article: Bioresource technology ISSN 0960-8524 ,1996, vol. 55, no3, pp. 215-221 (21 ref.) , but i dont think it was originally in english, and couldn't find english version.. but is about an anaerobic treatment of a recalcitrant distillery wastewater by a thermophilic UASB reactor .

Im also confused on how you make the site a DOI

Went to scifinder and my topic is still to broad.. trying to decide which part of the characterisation of anaerobic wastewater effluent to concentrate on.
Through Web of science (drexel library)
Found articles DOI link"Thermophilic treatment of bulk drug pharmaceutical industrial wastewaters by using hybrid up flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. " Maybe not concentrate on what treatment used for, but the type of reactor, the UASB reactor. Is an anaerobic system to treat wastewaters. I think I want to break apart on what exactly happens in a UASB reactor.

Article summary-
- This study explores the effects of gas-liquid-solid separator and sludge granulation concerning an up flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and filter to treat waste water. As a result the performance of the up flow anaerobic sludge blanket and filter improved; and the sludge granulation increased the absorption and produced microorganisms.

- The sludge bed, made up of suspended solids and bacteria, is the key to a functional UASB due to its digestive capabilities. Temperature and upflow velocity directly affect the size of the granules. The size is crucial because the more dense the granule the less it will be aggravated at the bottom of the tank so the UASB will function properly and be cost effective.
- The UASB reactor must have a gas-liquid-solid separator to make sure the waste water gets digested by the sludge and sludge is not lost in the system. It has been established that a conventional plate along with a parallel plate is the most efficient way to accomplish this.
- In this study the age of sludge was observed to see if it effecting the GLS separator.
- Waste water used was combined effluent. Analyzed by measuring chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total suspended solids, etc.
- Made small scale reactor including, glass collector, UASB reactor, feed tank, and effluent collector.
- Separator designed to get rid of particles not settled and make sure as little of sludge was lost as possible.
- Reactor has sludge granules from two different sources so a bacterium has variety. Activated sludge began to break down and act as food for bacteria.
Results and Discussion
- When sludge is aged the total solid and volatile suspended solids increased due to an increase in sludge settling to bottom of reactor and production of biomass. The food to microorganism ratio is what will determine the growth rate at appropriate temperature.
- The volatile suspended solids to the total solids are a direct relationship expressing the growth of the biomass and how well the system is doing.
- In filtered reactor solid count is very low.
- Build up of minerals in sludge caused by microbiological growth. Mostly quartz and illite.
- Addition of gas-liquid-solid separator greatly improved the performance of the reactor.
- Increase in volatile suspended solids to total solids ratio determines the granules progress. Must treat for at least 3 months (90 days). GLSS improved system.

In process of writing paper. Not exactly sure of the format, so Im just going for flow right now and plan on going back and further organizing.

In assignment 2- i have partial marks for not citing, but i think i have corrected it.

I dont plan on posting my paper on wiki untill it has more substance and is better organized.
